On October 9, 2009, Obama’s message of global cooperation (koh-ah-per-AY-shun) was rewarded with the Nobel Peace Prize. Past winners include Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Theresa, and Nelson Mandela. The Nobel committee explained why they chose Obama for the award: “Only very rarely has a person ... captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future.” Now the world was listening to, and believing in, Obama’s message of “Yes We Can.”
